A concert – featuring the ensemble Sentieri selvaggi under the direction of Carlo Boccadoro – that spectacularly disproves all those clichés which, unfortunately, are still responsible for keeping most listeners away from venues where today’s music is performed

Biography

Sentieri selvaggi was founded in 1997 by Carlo Boccadoro, Filippo Del Corno and Angelo Miotto with the aim of bringing contemporary music closer to a wider audience.

Over the years, Sentieri selvaggi has collaborated with some of the most prominent composers on the international scene, including David Lang, Louis Andriessen, James MacMillan, Philip Glass, Gavin Bryars, Michael Nyman, Julia Wolfe and Fabio Vacchi, who have composed works for the ensemble or entrusted them with the Italian premieres of their pieces.

Alongside these figures, the group promotes and disseminates a new generation of Italian composers such as Francesco Antonioni, Silvia Colasanti, Giovanni Mancuso and Mauro Montalbetti.

Since 1998, Sentieri selvaggi has been a regular guest of the most prestigious Italian concert seasons (Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Teatro alla Scala, Venice Biennale, Accademia Filarmonica Romana, Unione Musicale di Torino, Teatro Grande di Brescia), of the country’s major cultural events (Festivaletteratura in Mantua, RomaEuropa Festival, Festival della Scienza in Genoa, MiTo Festival, Triennale Milano, Festival Aperto in Reggio Emilia), and of important international festivals (Bang on a Can Marathon in New York, SKIF Festival in St. Petersburg, Sacrum Profanum in Krakow).

In Milan, from 1998 to 2023 the group was in partnership with Teatridithalia (later Teatro Elfo Puccini), which hosted its concerts and with which it created a contemporary music season featuring concerts, talks and masterclasses, each year focused on a specific thematic core.

To bring contemporary music into unconventional settings, Sentieri Selvaggi also collaborates with writers, architects, scientists, video artists, actors, directors, and rock and jazz musicians, inhabiting alternative spaces with its projects: art galleries, squares, streets, shopping malls and universities.

The ensemble’s catalogue of recordings and publications includes numerous titles produced for Einaudi, RaiTrade, MN Records, Velut Luna (winner of the 2008 Premio Tenco with Il Cantante al Microfono), Sensible Records and Cantaloupe Music, the New York label founded by Bang on a Can, for which four albums have been released. The most recent of these, Zingiber, is dedicated to the new Italian musical creativity. In 2017, Le Sette Stelle was released by the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label, featuring music by Luca Francesconi, Filippo Del Corno, Giorgio Colombo Taccani, Giovanni Sollima, Mauro Montalbetti and Carlo Boccadoro.

A significant chapter in the ensemble’s work is represented by its musical theatre productions, with stagings such as The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by Michael Nyman and The Sound of a Voice by Philip Glass, which have reached an even broader audience.

In 2022, the ensemble was in residence at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, with a focus on recent American music.

In the autumn of 2024, Sentieri selvaggi and OHT produced Nuvolario, based on Steve Reich’s masterpiece Music for 18 Musicians. The production premiered at Festival Aperto in Reggio Emilia, with further performances at RomaEuropa Festival and the Sagra Malatestiana in Rimini.

The presidency of the Association is held by Mirco Ghirardini, while artistic and musical direction is entrusted to Carlo Boccadoro.
